Are we insignificant?

Daily Journal Prompts - 28 March 2025

In one of my favourite books, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, there’s a terrifying device called the Total Perspective Vortex.

Step inside, and you’re shown yourself, and then slowly zooming out, out, and out, the entire vastness of the universe.

Everyone who experiences it goes insane. They realise just how astronomically insignificant they really are.

This scene has stuck with me for years. It’s extremely humbling.

It’s a brutal but necessary reminder that we are all, in the grand scheme, just tiny specks.

We obsess over our personal struggles as if they are the centre of the universe and we are the main characters.

But sometimes, all we need is to zoom out—to step into our own "perspective vortex"—and remember how much else is out there.

Paradoxically, realising our smallness can be empowering.

If nothing ultimately "matters" on a cosmic scale, then we are free to define our own meaning.

The stakes aren’t as high as we think. We can take more risks, try new things, and let go of the weight we put on ourselves.

So, when you’re feeling stuck, maybe all you need is a shift in perspective. The universe won’t change—but how you see yourself within it can.

Today’s Prompts

1 - When was the last time you felt small in the grand scheme of things? How did it make you feel?

2 - Imagine you are going into the Total Perspective Vortex, what do you imagine you will be thinking of?

3 - If everything in life is temporary, what still feels meaningful to you?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
