Being right feels weird when no one agrees with you
Daily Journal Prompts - 19 May 2025
Last week, we were playtesting our game, and my friend made a big move that, according to the rules, wasn’t allowed.
I immediately pointed it out. But everyone else disagreed.
The debate got tense.
I was sure I was right. After all, I co-wrote the rules.
But as the group pushed back, something unexpected happened.
I started sweating. My heart rate picked up. I felt uncomfortable.
And then I caught myself doing something I didn’t expect: I nearly gave in.
Even though I was certain I was right, I was moments away from just agreeing with the group so we could move on.
Eventually, I paused, took a deep breath, and explained the rule calmly again — this time with full context. And finally, they understood. I was right.
I’ve been reflecting on that moment. Why did I almost cave?
Turns out, this is a well-studied psychological phenomenon.
Research shows that social conformity has a powerful influence over us, even when we know the group is wrong.
In one experiment, people went along with obviously incorrect answers just because others did. Our brains are wired to avoid standing out.
That small experience, which took three minutes at most, gave me a lot to reflect on, in terms of how I handled myself under pressure, understanding how social conformity impacts me and how I can be my authentic self.
Today’s prompts cover these topics.
This Week’s Prompts (Monday - Wednesday)
1 - When did I last go along with something I disagreed with? Why did I do it?
2 - How does social pressure typically show up in my life: at work, with friends, or online?
3 - What helps me stay calm and grounded when others disagree with me? How did I do during my last few disagreements?
4 - Where in my life do I need to trust my knowledge or experience more?
5 - How can I practice being firm without being defensive or overbearing?
Get the most out of your journalling:
Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.
Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.
Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
I’d love your feedback
