Breaking free of our chains
Daily Journal Prompts - 16 October 2024
Every once in a while, we encounter ideas that transform how we view the world.
One such moment happened in high school when I came across a powerful quote by Jean-Jacques Rousseau:
"Man is born free but is everywhere in chains."
To me, this meant that as we become dependent on something, we become chained to it and our ability to see beyond it is limited.
Our jobs, for example, provide income but often stop us from taking risks or exploring new opportunities due to risk of losing a salary (aka, the chain).
Likewise, relying on family and friends for emotional support can keep us from stepping out of our comfort zones to meet new people and entertain new ideas.
I’ve tried to be intentional about not being tied to chains.
That’s partly why I decided to leave my career and start my journey as a solopreneur.
Freedom isn’t just a concept for me; it’s about actively loosening the ties that bind me to familiar routines and patterns.
I’m a big proponent of changing things up, whether it is shifting to a new house, taking on a completely new type of work, reading a different type of book, or even moving to a new country.
These are all actions that loosen the chains I have to my environment, preferences, and thoughts.
It keeps me growing.

Get the most out of your journalling:
Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.
Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.
Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
I’d love your feedback
