Domino effect

Daily Journal Prompts - 20 March 2025

A friend of mine owns a business chain that was hit hard during Covid.

He had to shut down most locations and struggled with staffing, slowly reopening them as business recovered.

When his finance lead left, he had planned to rehire, but soon forgot about it, instead focusing on resume operations across the remaining locations.

That came back to bite him, as he found his accounts were in chaos with a looming tax submission around the horizon.

As it always tends to happens, he also faced very stressful operational issues that demanded the majority of his time, preventing him from focusing on his accounts.

What seemed like a small thing to delay hiring, turned into a major scramble, as he found himself racing against time to fix a problem that had grown far larger than it needed to be, potentially resulting in fines or branch closures.

This is something we all experience.

Putting off difficult tasks doesn’t make them disappear; it makes them harder to handle later.

The lesson is clear: Don’t put off what’s important, even if it feels like a small problem now.

What “first dominos” are you ignoring in your life that might trigger a bigger problem down the road?
