A few days ago, a friend and I were reminiscing about our University days (I can’t believe that was 15 years ago!)
We were thinking back to how, at the start of the semester, some students would select classes based on how lenient the Professor was (aka, how easy it was to get a good grade).
I found this idea repulsive because it contradicted my belief that the purpose of education is to learn, grow, and explore, not to find a shortcut to a grade.
Most of the people I know who did this at university really struggled early in their careers. They found the pace too quick and the workload too much to handle, especially with strategic work.
If you take shortcuts, you will be in trouble when you have to put in the required hard work.
I find that true throughout life:
The biggest rewards and growth I have received professionally have come when I have consistently put in hard work and pushed the boundaries of what I am capable of doing, instead of taking shortcuts and “ticking the box” on projects
When running an event, I can anticipate problems and challenges much better when I plan out the flow instead of following an events company’s plan.
I have learnt so many new skills by setting up my own Shopify store instead of outsourcing it, allowing me to fix and change things on the fly instead of waiting for a vendor to respond.
I have avoided cash grabs and pump-and-dump schemes by doing my own research instead of following friends who, in turn, followed influencers.
Always think of what you lose out on or deny yourself by taking a shortcut.
Today’s Prompts
1 - Growth-related prompts
When was a time I took a shortcut and regretted it later? What did I learn?
How do I feel about facing challenges head-on versus looking for easier routes? What could I possibly lose out on by taking a shortcut?
What does “doing the hard work” mean to me in my career and personal life?
2 - Quote of the day
“There are no shortcuts to true excellence.” - Angela Duckworth
3 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt
What’s a skill I learned the hard way, and how did it change me?
Get the most out of your journalling:
Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.
Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.
Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
I’d love your feedback
