Shit happens

Now and then, something happens that can mess up all the hard work you put in.

Early in my career, I was organising an awards ceremony, and my job was to prepare the final slides revealing the winners.

The competition ended just 30 minutes before the ceremony, so everything was under a serious time crunch.

I received the list of winners: #1 on top, #2 in the middle, and #3 at the bottom.

My slides, however, were designed to reveal the winners in reverse order, starting with #3, then #2, and finally #1.

But in the rush, I followed the list as it was, putting the winners in the wrong order.

Thankfully, the client—a true lifesaver—decided to double-check the order, even though the event had already started. That’s when we realised my mistake.

Instead of panicking, we had the presence of mind to make the changes on a second laptop and do a seamless switch, avoiding a very embarrassing mistake.

I got lucky that day because we could think fast and solve the problem within the 90 seconds before the reveal.

Today’s episode is all about how you react when things go sideways. Because, trust me, they will.
