#4 - On risk and reward

On risk and reward

Early on in my career at a PR firm, I was offered a chance to lead an account for a new client we had won.

I turned it down. I was very comfortable where I was, and my existing clients liked me. A new client could mean trouble—a new relationship to build, potentially longer hours, and more work.

Over the next year, I watched as my colleagues managing the new account had a blast, doing extremely fun work (yes, with longer hours) and ending the year with both industry recognition for an impactful campaign and personal rewards in the form of promotions and bonuses.

Looking on with envy, I wondered whether I had made the right choice. I was doing the same work that I had already mastered and barely grew in the last year. I would have flourished with the new client.

On the flip side, what if I had said yes to the opportunity, but it turned out badly?

After thinking long and hard, I figured that even if I failed or it didn’t work out, the new experience would have led to personal growth in some form or another and been a net positive.

My relationship with risk forever changed after that, and I started considering the hidden costs of not making a decision into my decision-making process.

Today’s Prompts

1 - Self-reflection / Risk

Are you taking enough risks in life? How would you like to change your relationship with risk?

2 - Work & Career / Motivation

What is one way you can stay motivated and inspired in your professional life?

3 - Quote of the day

“I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” — Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

4 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What is your most important task today (or tomorrow if you are writing this at night)?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
