Everyone goes through their own journey

Daily Journal Prompts - 11 December 2024

I was miserable for the entire first two years of my career.

I have an economics degree but was never interested in working in the field.

Instead, I pursued a career in marketing, landing a job at a start-up PR agency where I was among the first non-Founder employees.

My salary was really low compared to my peers, but I selected the job because it allowed me to work across industries and learn more about how different businesses work.

Most of my University friends went on to high-profile finance, banking, and trading roles, earning more than double my salary. And I worked much longer hours than them.

This would be reflected in their holidays, the restaurants they ate at, and the clothes they wore. While I would look for the cheapest item on the menu, they would get the most expensive ones.

This jealousy (yes, let’s call it what it was) prevented me from looking at all the positives in my life.

I was able to forge strong connections and learned about many new things, including P&L, sales, and content, which most fresh graduates don’t get to do for several years. Most importantly, I directly and visibly impacted my clients’ business.

One day (I can’t remember what prompted it), I decided not to bother about what others were doing but only to compare my progress against myself.

I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. I have never wasted breath comparing myself with others since then.

We all go through our own journey. Yet, sometimes even we forget this.

Today’s Prompts

Reflection

How can you embrace your unique journey? How do you handle moments of jealousy or comparison?

Reflect on your life five years ago. In what ways have you grown since then?

Write about a time when you felt like you were behind in life. How did you overcome that feeling?

Quote of the day

The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

List three things you are grateful for in your current journey.

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
