Everything adds up

Daily Journal Prompts - 9 December 2024

We’re all familiar with the idea that things add up over time. For example, if you put just $5 aside every day, it will become $1,825 in a year and $9,125 in five years.

This past weekend, I saw two examples of this concept — one positive and one negative.

The positive example

I hit my 2024 personal best time for a 5 km run.

After completing a half-marathon, I’ve been working on decreasing my weight with a mix of gym work and high-intensity running.

The gains added up, and I feel lighter, faster and fitter as I aim for new personal bests!

The negative example

I’ve been working from home most of the past few weeks. My mum has been staying with us, so this way I get to spend time with her.

For once, our house is fully stocked with snacks, fruits and condiments. We’ve also received a lot of deliveries during this time due to the holiday season around the corner.

I tend to put things aside out of convenience, which is fine temporarily, but they need to be set aside in the proper location at some point.

Suddenly, the house felt like it was exploding with stuff, making my wife and I feel a bit miserable, and we spent half a morning tidying up.

The individual packages added up quickly to become a full blown mess without us realising.

Today’s Prompts

1 - Growth

Reflect on your past week. What are some actions your future self will thank you for, and what are some actions your future self will be upset with you for?

Reflect on one area of your life where you feel things are adding up negatively. What can you change?

What daily routines or rituals help you feel grounded and productive over time? How can you ensure you continue doing them or improve them over time?

2 - Quote of the day

“It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” – John Wooden.

3 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

List three small habits you’re proud of cultivating.

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
