Imposter syndrome

Daily Journal Prompts - 14 November 2024

My thoughts on “imposter syndrome” have shifted over time.

Initially, I thought it was negative and meant that one had risen above one’s skill set, which could be detrimental to a career.

That thinking changed when I was hired to lead a social media and content team in my second job despite having no social media experience.

My first job was at a PR agency, where I could write and think of angles and content, but I quickly realised that social media was a whole different ballgame.

I was quickly thrown into the deep end, where I had to advise other colleagues on their social media strategies.

Initially, I was overwhelmed, but soon, I spent every waking hour reading and learning about social media, partly to avoid looking like a fool and partly to ensure my effectiveness.

Within a few weeks, I reached an acceptable competency level and started to make a real difference to the team.

Since then, I’ve viewed “imposter syndrome” as a sign of growth.

Today’s Prompts

1 - Self-reflection

When was the last time I felt like an imposter? What triggered it, and how did I respond?

How can I reframe my feelings of inadequacy as opportunities to learn?

What would I say to a friend feeling like an imposter? Can I apply that advice to myself?

2 - Quote of the day

“Logic is not part of the imposter syndrome you are feeling. When you feel like an imposter, it’s not for a logical reason, it’s an emotional and rooted in self-doubt.” - Tracy Bingaman

3 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What’s one small goal I can set today to grow in a challenging area?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
