Improving productivity at work

Daily Journal Prompts - 13 October 2024

I came across a study exploring how companies can improve their employees’ productivity without spending an arm and a leg.

It has interesting insights that we can apply fairly easily.

The researchers assigned participants to four groups:

  1. Smartphone group who had to reduce their smartphone use by one hour daily for one week

  2. Sport group who increase their daily physical activity by 30 minutes

  3. Combination group who did both #1 and #2

  4. Control group who don’t change their routine at all

The results — In groups #1 and #3, work satisfaction & motivation, work-life balance and mental health improved significantly.

Additionally, the feeling of work overload and depressive symptoms of not having a sense of control decreased.

That’s incredible. Just by reducing daily smartphone use by 1 hour!

It makes me wonder if there are any other easy hacks I can implement to improve my lifestyle.

Here’s the research.

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
