- It's not my scope
It's not my scope
Daily Journal Prompts - 2 April 2025
When I started my career 15 years ago, the idea of "That's not my job" was a rare sentiment.
If the business needed something done, it didn’t matter whether it was part of your job description or not—you did it.
My thinking was simple: if the business trusted me to handle something outside my usual responsibilities, I should give it my all.
I wasn’t too concerned about the “not getting paid to do more work” idea as I always believe that if you put in the work and show value, money will come.
Looking back, the most significant leaps in my career came when I stepped up and took on tasks beyond my scope.
Those were the moments when I learned the most, earned the trust of my colleagues and superiors, and grew professionally as I was exposed to new challenges and opportunities.
But I notice a trend now, especially among the newer generation, where the phrase "It's not my job" or "That's outside my job scope" has become a frequent response when additional tasks or responsibilities are asked of them.
And I completely understand the importance of setting boundaries — they are vital for mental well-being, work-life balance, and long-term career sustainability.
In an era where the lines between personal and professional life are increasingly blurred, being able to say "no" is crucial for maintaining your sense of self, avoiding being overwhelmed, and protecting your mental health.
The trick is finding the right balance—knowing when to say “no” to your health and when to take on something new that will challenge you.
That’s the inspiration for today’s prompts.
Today’s Prompts
To find the right balance, ask yourself these three questions when evaluating opportunities
1 - What will I learn from this?
2 - How does this fit into my long-term goals?
3 - Am I saying "yes" because I feel obligated or because it's an opportunity to grow?
I’d love your feedback
