Learning from others

Daily Journal Prompts - 1 November 2024

I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible colleagues and bosses.

I learned invaluable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and perseverance from them. Their positivity, dedication, and wisdom helped shape my professional journey and gave me examples to aspire to.

On the other hand, I’ve also had the misfortune of working with incredibly difficult and toxic colleagues and bosses.

Initially, these experiences felt draining and demoralising, but over time, I realised they were equally valuable.

From them, I learned what not to do: how not to treat others, what attitudes to avoid, and why empathy, patience, and communication are crucial in a work environment.

The truth is, we are constantly learning from those around us, whether we’re aware of it or not.

With a little intention and reflection, we can decide which behaviours to extract and adapt to become better versions of ourselves.

Today’s Prompts

1 - Reflection

What are some positive traits I learned from a colleague or boss, and how can I embody them into my professional and personal life?

2 - Reflection

What are some negative traits I noticed in someone I don’t respect, and how can I consciously avoid exhibiting it?

3 - Quote of the day

“A single conversation across the table with a wise man is better than ten years mere study of books.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

4 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What’s one piece of advice you’ve received from a boss that you continue to follow today?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
