Learning from Rwanda

Daily Journal Prompts - 1 March 2025

On the flight back from Portugal, I watched a documentary series called The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan featuring Romesh, a British comedian, who visits different countries with a crew recording his experience.

In the episode I watched, he visits Rwanda.

Going into the episode, my only association about Rwanda was that a terrible genocide happened there.

I would go so far to say that when I hear “Rwanda”, I would immediately think “genocide”.

Boy, did this episode shatter my perception — the country has not only recovered and moved on, but is thriving.

This video really moved me — Romesh’s tour guide spoke about how he moved on from the genocide by forgiving those who killed his father.

Be warned: it is raw and talking about heavy topics.

It made me reflect — if a country where neighbours killed neighbours in a gruesome genocide could move on and forgive each other for their actions, why can’t I get over long-held conflicts or rifts in life?

There’s a lot that can be learned from the Rwanda story, most of all the lesson of forgiveness and empathy.

Today’s Prompt

Reflect on a personal conflict or a long-standing rift in your life. What emotions, misunderstandings, or assumptions have contributed to this divide?

Jot down three tangible step you could take to start building a bridge—whether it’s initiating a calm conversation, seeking mutual understanding, or even just reframing your perspective on the conflict.

I’d love your feedback
