Most common questions around journaling

Daily Journal Prompts - 11 October 2024

When I was researching for this newsletter, I found three questions popping up again and again online:

  1. What should I write about? (And a variation - am I writing about the right things?)

  2. How often should I write?

  3. What journal or digital tool should I use?

My advice is not to stress about #2 or #3.

If you worry too much about streaks or whether your journal or tool is perfect, you put yourself at risk from stopping this beautiful habit.

In my opinion, the most important factor when it comes to journaling is knowing WHY you want to do it. Here are the typical reasons:

  1. Reflecting on your life in order to process emotions, build resilience, gain clarity and to grow —> that’s mostly what we do in this newsletter.

  2. Documenting your day: Where you write about what happened every day.

  3. Stream of consciousness journaling: Where you write without a prompt and just let the words flow. It’s great for creativity!

  4. Expressing gratitude.

  5. Organise myself better with structured tools like a bullet journal which tend to help you plan and reflect on your day as well as get organised for the next.

So, what is your WHY for journaling?

Today’s Prompts

1 - Journaling

Why do I want to journal and what do I hope to gain from it?

2 - Journaling

How can I journal today without worrying about whether it’s perfect?

3 - Journaling

What does journaling mean to me at this point in my life?

4 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What am I grateful for today?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
