My last fitness goal of the year
Daily Journal Prompts - 18 November 2024
This morning, I completed a half marathon, my final fitness goal remaining for the year.
Running a distance is not just a physical journey. It’s also an emotional journey.
It’s just you and your thoughts for an extended period.
It’s a period of extended reflection. Here are some of my reflections during the race:
- It’s been six years since I did my last long run of a similar distance or more. I had made many attempts during this time but never stuck to it. The difference this time was in accepting that I would have bad run days through my journey when, previously, I would quit after having a few bad runs in a row.
- When I started this journey three months ago, I couldn’t run 2 km. I’ve come a long way
- I had two accountability buddies. My wife also participated in a half-marathon and a friend was training for a full marathon. We pushed each other on, and the long early Sunday morning runs became non-negotiable on the calendar.
- The most important thing that helped me improve my running capabilities was being consistent with my running. No matter what, I would show up and put in my best effort, even when overseas on holidays.
- These are lessons for running. And they are lessons for life. How could I apply these to other areas of my life?
Next year’s target: a full marathon!
Today’s Prompts
Goals
Reflect on a recent goal or achievement or win. What lessons did I learn through the process?
Reflect on a goal I have but aren’t working towards or stopped working towards. What are some challenges that will come up through the journey? How can I navigate these?
Quote of the day
“Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.” — Oprah Winfrey
The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt
What next goal will I work towards?
Get the most out of your journalling:
- Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
- Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.
- Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.
- Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
I’d love your feedback
