Question everything

Daily Journal Prompts - 2 October 2024

A year into my first job, one of the largest global agency networks acquired the startup agency I was working at.

I suddenly found myself surrounded by cumbersome processes that took up valuable thinking and execution time.

Whenever I probed to find out why we were doing something, the response was a variation of “that’s how we’ve always done it”.

One day, I’d had enough. I had wasted half a day with a nonsensical claims submission process and couldn’t take it anymore.

So, I spent 30 minutes drawing up a simplified, user-friendly process and sent it to the CFO, who loved it and implemented it within a week.

Just like that, a process that annoyed many became easy.

Questioning everything doesn't mean being defiant for the sake of it—it means asking why things are the way they are and finding ways to improve them.

In my opinion, it is one of the most underrated skills for excelling in the workplace and in life.

Today’s Prompts

1 - Work & career

What is one process at work that you've never questioned but think could be improved?

2 - Work & career

How can you respectfully challenge someone else’s idea or process without creating conflict?

3 - Quote of the day

“Question everything. Learn something. Answer nothing.” – Euripedes

4 - The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What is one thing you regretted not questioning in the workplace?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
