Review your year: Spotting behaviour patterns and gaps

Daily Journal Prompts - 17 December 2024

This is episode #10 of the ‘Review your Year’ series. The entire process from start to finish is summarised here.

By now, you have spent significant time reviewing your year in various areas of life, including work and career, relationships, finances, health and fitness, etc.

The next step is to analyse your reflections, carefully identifying patterns, addressing gaps, and deciding what to let go of.

There are quite a few prompts today, but they can be answered relatively quickly. If you’ve already started your year-end reflections, some of these should be on your mind.

Prompts to Identify Patterns

What are recurring themes in your achievements or struggles?

Are habits or triggers consistently leading to positive or negative outcomes?

Examples

Positive: Reading more instead of doom-scrolling; Constantly showing up for family

Negative: Put off working out in the morning and never get to it later; Taking on too many projects and getting overwhelmed

Prompts to Spot Gaps & Opportunities

Look at each area of your life and identify those that feel underdeveloped compared to others.

Are there skills or experiences that will improve your life and performance?

Examples

Career: A lack of good social media content creation skills is hampering business growth

Relationships: I haven’t spent enough time maintaining friendships

Fun: My current hobby (playing with Lego) is expensive, and I should explore a less expensive hobby to keep me occupied and engaged

Health & Fitness: Losing a bit more weight will boost my marathon training next year

Prompts to Decide What to Let Go

What beliefs about yourself or others have held you back?

Are there habits that consume time or energy without meaningful return?

Are there relationships that drain you rather than uplift you?

What regrets will you let go of before 2025?

Examples

Reducing interactions with a friend who only brings toxicity and stress to the relationship

Letting go of my belief that I can only work on my Desktop. Usually, this means I avoid responding to people while on the move, sometimes causing project delays.

I’d love your feedback.
