The Barcelos Rooster
Daily Journal Prompts - 11 February 2024
I’ve spent the last few days immersing myself in Portuguese culture during our holiday.
One fascinating thing we noticed was that there are rooster’s everywhere; not the animal, but curios and paintings of roosters.
Our tour guide told us that the rooster (also called the Barcelos Rooster) is a cherished symbol of the Portuguese love of life.
The legend tells of a pilgrim who, while travelling, was wrongfully accused of theft in the town of Barcelos
Despite his pleas of innocence, he was sentenced to hang.
As a final request, he was granted an audience with the judge, who was dining with friends.
Pointing to a roasted rooster on the table, the pilgrim declared, “It is as certain that I am innocent as it is that this rooster will crow.”
The judge and his friends were skeptical. But as they were about to ask the pilgrim to leave, the rooster miraculously stood up and crowed.
The pilgrim was immediately released.
This beautiful story underscores the power of unwavering faith and the profound love for life.
The pilgrim’s determination to live resonated so deeply that it manifested in the miraculous revival of the rooster.
