The joy of being bad at something

Daily Journal Prompts - 6 March 2025

At some point in life, you have tried something and discovered that you are terrible at it.

There are tons of things that come to mind from my journey — coding, drawing, learning new languages, writing, sales, cooking.

Generally, we tend to avoid things we’re not good at, even if they are things we want to learn or pick up.

We gravitate towards skills we’ve already mastered or activities where we can at least hold our own.

Some years ago, while reflecting, I realised that there was a special joy in doing things I’m bad at.

Maybe it’s the lack of expectations, so anything well done is a surprise.

Or, it’s the knowledge that you are at the bottom of a mountain, and progress can only go one way.

Being a beginner reminds me that learning is fun.

So, let’s embrace our badness because when we let go of the pressure to excel, we rediscover the pure joy of doing something just for the sake of it.

Whether dancing terribly, drawing lopsided sketches, or fumbling through a new language, the magic isn’t in perfection—it’s in the process.

When did you last do something purely for fun, without caring about the result?

Today’s Prompts

How does the fear of being bad at something hold you back in life?

When did you last do something purely for fun, without caring about the result?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
