Trying standup comedy

Daily Journal Prompts - 3 January 2025

I’ve always been in awe of standup comedians.

It takes courage to get up on stage trying to convince a diverse audience that you are funny.

What if you mess up a line? What if your joke doesn’t land? What if someone heckles you?

I would be petrified. I don’t like speaking to an audience that I don’t know.

In previous jobs, I used to decline speaking engagements for this very reason, even though it would have been beneficial to my career.

And that’s exactly why one of my goals for the year is to try standup comedy.

Just a 5 minute set at an open mic night.

Committing forces me to prepare extra hard to confront my fears.

But at the end of the day, I want to get rid of things that are holding me back, and the only way to do that is to tackle them head on.

Today’s Prompts

Confronting & noticing your fears

What fear is holding you back that you need to overcome? What are the first steps you can take towards this?

What are your top three fears? What situations trigger this fear? How does it show up in your body (E.g. tension, racing heart, dizziness, etc)? What do you think is the worst-case scenario if this fear were to come true?

What are some beliefs you hold about your fear? Will your friends say they are rational?

The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

If you could give yourself one piece of advice for the day, what would it be? Why?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
