What are you willing to give up?

Daily Journal Prompts - 24 December 2024

I was listening to a podcast interview (recommended by a reader - thanks for that!) with Chris Bumstead, a professional bodybuilder who has won the Mr Olympia Classic Physique title give times.

I know nothing about bodybuilding, so the entire episode was a learning experience for me.

The most striking part of the conversation came somewhere in the first hour, where he talks about what he had to give up to be the best in the world — not eating most types of food, sacrificing mental health, time with family, enduring bodily harm.

I’ve heard about this idea many times but never really thought about in the context of my goals.

But in my recent reflections, I realise that it is true.

Every time I want to focus on something, I have had to give up something, whether consciously or not.

When I started my side hustles and solopreneurship career, I’ve reduced the amount of socialising with family and friends.

When focusing on my health and sleep, I’ve stopped watching football past 11 pm so I don’t disrupt my sleep cycle.

I gave up watching TV shows and movies a long time ago, so that I can spend more time on myself — reading, writing, journaling.

It is timely that I heard this as I was planning my 2025 goals. Thinking about what I am willing to give up has made me more aware of what it will take to achieve them.

PS - here’s a link to the Modern Wisdom episode mentioned above.

Today’s Prompts

What are you willing to give up?

What am I willing to give up in 2025 to achieve my top priority? How can I plan my sacrifices to minimise regrets?

Where do I draw the line between a healthy sacrifice and an unhealthy one?

What’s one thing I think I should give up but am hesitant to let go of? Why is that?

The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What is one small thing I can give up this week to create space for something more important?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
