What do your favourite songs say about you?

Daily Journal Prompts - 9 January 2025

Have you ever stopped to reflect on why you’re drawn to certain songs?

The more I reflect on it, the stronger I feel that the music we connect with is a mirror of our values, experiences and emotions.

Here are 3 of my favourite songs:

  1. Jukebox Hero by Foreigner - which is a song about a transformative moment of clarity and inspiration. It’s about someone witnessing greatness and deciding they can reach the same heights.

  2. Dance of Death by Iron Maiden - which is about living life to the fullest. Listening to it feels like a rallying cry.

  3. The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance - which is a rock opera, an entire album, telling the story of a character with terminal cancer. This one hits close to home as my dad passed away from cancer a few years ago.

Analysing your favourite songs and music is a great way to learn more about yourself.

The songs I have on repeat carry themes of living authentically, facing challenges head-on and finding clarity.

Today’s Prompts

Musical reflection

What do your favourite songs say about you? What emotions or memories do they bring up? Why are they important to you?

How has your taste in music evolved over the years? What does this say about your personal growth?

If you had to describe your life with one song, what would it be? Why?

The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt

What’s one lyric that always sticks with you, and why?

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
