What does friendship mean to you?

Daily Journal Prompts - 26 February 2025

I’ve lived in four different cities through my life — Dubai (UAE), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Surrey (United Kingdom) and Singapore.

I’ve worked across different types of companies — PR agencies, advertising agencies, start-ups and traditional banks.

Each move and step brought new experiences, new cultures, and, most importantly, new friendships.

Some friendships lasted only as long as I lived in that city or worked in that job, fading naturally with time and distance.

Others, despite the years and miles between us, have remained strong, proving that true connections don’t always require proximity.

Through these experiences, I’ve come to realise that friendship means different things at different stages of life.

In school or University, you spend most of your time with your friends.

In adulthood, that changes as everyone has other priorities in their lives.

Friendship became less about constant presence and more about reliability—who shows up when life gets tough, who celebrates your wins without envy, and who you can go months without speaking to yet pick up right where you left off.

They also demand more work as you get older.

The friends I’ve kept over the years are the ones where both sides made an effort—checking in, making time, and being there even when life got busy.

So, what does friendship mean to you?
