Write a letter to your future self

Daily Journal Prompts - 17 October 2024

I had written off these types of prompts for most of my life.

I felt there was no value in doing so, and the content would be mostly fictional or dull.

Closing in on my 30th birthday, I came across a variation of the prompt that piqued my interest:

“Write a letter to your future self and ask him/her how they are doing.”

That was a fresh take. It moves the focus from reporting my thoughts to imagining what the future self must have gone through.

Ultimately, it helps you contextualise what will happen in the passage of time, separating your current and future self.

I took on the prompt and found it gave me a clear outline of how I would like my next ten years to go.

It’s now just under four years from my 40th birthday, and while the roadmap has evolved, it still holds me accountable today.

Today’s Prompts

Building a roadmap

Write a letter to your future self and ask him/her how they are doing.

Another variation: Imagine yourself ten years in the future and reflect on the past decade.

Get the most out of your journalling:

  • Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.

  • Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.

  • Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.

I’d love your feedback
