Amor Fati
Daily Journal Prompts - 1 February 2025
Amor Fati is my all-time favourite phrase and one of my 8 guiding principles for life.
It’s a Latin phrase that translates to “love of fate” or “love of one’s fate.”
Popularised by the Stoics, it’s a principle that encourages people to accept and embrace all aspects of life, including suffering and loss.
I love it because it reframes your attitude and perspective about everything.
Here are some ways it has helped me:
When my dad was diagnosed with a terminal illness, instead of wishing it didn’t happen, I strove to focus on spending as much quality time with him as possible
In my business, I accept that I may not be successful immediately. If it happens, well and good, but if it doesn’t, there will be super learnings for my next attempt
When I had to give up a great job and suddenly be faced with an extended period of time without income
Not getting angry when your flight is cancelled or your travel plans are derailed
When I had to have surgery and spent my first semester of college on crutches
There’s something beautiful in the idea of Amor Fati.
Today’s prompts explore how we can incorporate the idea of controlling our response to events.
Today’s Prompts
Accepting your fate
What does “loving your fate” mean to you personally?
What’s a challenge in your life right now, and how can you approach it with love and acceptance?
How do you react when things don’t go as planned? How can you change that reaction?
Quote of the day
"Not merely to bear what is necessary, but to love it." – Marcus Aurelius
The 'If you don’t have time’ Prompt
How does accepting what’s outside my control help me feel more at peace today?
Get the most out of your journalling:
Choose one prompt: Focus on just one prompt each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Be brutally honest: Reflect openly and honestly. This is your safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Take your time: Sometimes it takes a few days to clarify your thinking. Here’s permission for you to take your time to unravel a prompt and not take on any new ones during that time.
Journal your way: Whether you prefer writing, audio recording, or video, choose the method that suits you best.
Don't stress about streaks: If you miss a day, don't worry. You can always revisit a previous prompt.
I’d love your feedback
